Temecula’s newest wine store, Wine On A Dime, is owned and operated by Don and Michelle Campini. Many may recognize their names, as they are the former owners of Campini’s Deli.
After 8 years of owning the Deli, the Campini’s sold it in 2006 and, in January of this year, they opened Wine On A Dime. When asked why they decided to open a wine store, Don replied, “Just like the deli, we felt it was a niche that had not been filled.”
There are wine stores in the area, but Wine On A Dime is different. Don and Michelle have opened a store that has more of a warehouse feel to it: stacks of wine against the wall and tables down the center that holds wine and hand crafted beer. There is much to choose from.
It still sounds similar, right? Well—here’s how it’s different: first, they have hand selected wines you can taste for 10 cents each and, if you find one you like you can also purchase a glass; second, they also have several hand-crafted beers you can enjoy there by the glass or take home with you; finally, and most importantly, is the pricing they have on everything they sell.
For instance, the first special they had: Di Majo Norante Sangiovese 2008, which was just rated 90 points, on sale for $7.99, or $7.59—if you buy a case. About 80% of the wines in the store are $20.00 or under because, as Don says, “that’s what sells right now.” He goes on to explain that he also carries more expensive wines like Castelgiocondo Brunello, a Wine Spectator top 100 wine for 2009, plus many others.
Since they are newly opened, there are more things to come for Wine On A Dime; such as, structured wine tastings, beer tastings, classes, etc., but, as Don says, “we are waiting to see what our customers want and we will do our best to provide it to them.”
